Why We Need More Female Leaders: Empowering Women to Break Barriers and Lead with Confidence.

Updated: Jul 25

“Leadership is hard to define and good leadership even harder. But if you can get people to follow you to the ends of the earth, you are a great leader.” - Indra Nooyi.

Recently, I have been closely observing Indra Nooyi, the former leader of the renowned soft drink and snack conglomerate, PepsiCo.

The Power of Defying Conventional Success Norms: A Journey with Indra Nooyi

Indra's journey serves as a compelling illustration of the importance of disregarding conventional definitions of success.

  • She's an immigrant, hailing from Madras, India, and belonging to a Tamil family, which adds layers of cultural richness and diversity to her identity.

  • Growing up in a patriarchal culture, she faced societal norms that often hindered the progress of females due to the prevalent belief that they would prioritize marriage and family over their careers.

  • This cultural backdrop shaped her resilience and determination to defy these expectations and pave her own path.

  • Despite the challenges posed by the "Glass Ceiling" and the persistent pay gap in corporate America, she remained undeterred in pursuing her ambitions.

  • These systemic barriers, particularly pronounced for women and women of color, did not impede her journey towards success. Instead, they fueled her drive to excel and break through these barriers, proving her mettle in a competitive environment.

Her remarkable journey reached a milestone when she secured a scholarship to the prestigious Yale School of Management in 2008. This achievement not only

This achievement not only underscored her academic prowess and leadership potential but also highlighted her ability to transcend boundaries and shatter stereotypes.

She's also a wife, mother and avid cricket fan.

Empowering Lessons for Female Entrepreneurs: Insights from Her Experiences

What insights can we gain from her experiences, and how can we implement these teachings as women in the entrepreneurial field?

1. That limitations are largely self-imposed - This concept was deeply ingrained in Indra's upbringing. Her parents instilled in her the belief that one's potential is often hindered by self-imposed barriers.

By consistently visualizing herself as the President of India every night, she mastered the profound impact of imagination in surpassing boundaries.

2. That we are greater than our deepest fears - Indra's journey from CFO to CEO was marked by a profound realization that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to act despite it.

By boldly embracing her fears, she exuded resilience, igniting inspiration in her team and stakeholders.

"This is not a leaky pipeline, its a broken pipeline. In the U.S., women make up 5% of CEOs and only 22% of board directors. Were basically not utilizing half of the brilliance of society."- Indra Nooyi.

3. That we need to build a community/ tribe to stand with us - Indra's leadership style was characterized by inclusivity and collaboration. By viewing herself as a "global shopkeeper," she recognized the importance of building a supportive community around her.

This approach enabled her to connect with people at all levels of the organization, understand their needs, and drive impactful changes that benefited the entire tribe.

Join the Action: Stop Standing on the Sidelines!

Many times in life, we find ourselves hesitant to fully engage and participate, choosing instead to observe from the sidelines.

This can be due to fear, uncertainty, or a lack of confidence. However, true growth and progress often come from stepping out of our comfort zones and actively taking part in the game of life.

If you're one of those individuals who's been lingering on the sidelines, it may be time to reflect on what is holding you back and consider making a change.

By reaching out and sharing a challenge you are currently facing, you are taking the first step towards confronting and overcoming it. Challenges come in various forms – they can be personal, professional, emotional, or even spiritual.

"The only way you're going to achieve what you want is to be a lifelong student. Study everything."- Indra Nooyi.

By acknowledging and addressing these challenges, you're demonstrating courage and resilience. So, don't hesitate to share your challenge and take a step towards the field. Remember, it is okay to seek support and guidance along the way.

Together, we can navigate through the obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side.

I don’t feel like I want to continue with my existing business and fear has kept me from helping potential clients. I feel like I want something new, that fits my personality and would make me proud of myself while creating wealth.... 💭
